Ventilators shortage weakening India’s response to COVID-19

COVID-19 Impact on India Ventilator Industry

The shortage of ventilators has been reported in India due to the surging cases of COVID-19 in the country. As per the Worldometer, on 27th April 2020, the number of new incidences of coronavirus was 1,561 and 58 mortalities. The rising number of cases has created a burden on India’s healthcare system to meet the demand for essential medical equipment, including ventilators. The country’s ventilator manufacturers have significantly relied on foreign countries for ventilator components. However, disruption in the supply chain has encouraged the companies to focus on domestic manufacturing capabilities to curtail the shortage of ventilators. For instance, the government entities, including the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Bharat Electronics Ltd., are working with the Indian ventilator manufacturers and automobile companies to meet the essential need for components in the production of ventilators. As reported, the Indian Health Ministry ordered Bharat Heavy Electrical Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) to supply 30,000 and a public sector unit (PSU) would produce 10,000 ventilators by June 2020.
